Hel - town in Puck County, Pomeranian Voivodeship, located on the top of the Hel Peninsula, some 33 kilometres (21 miles) from the Polish mainland. The Kashubian village of Hel was first mentioned in 1198 as a centre of herring trade area named Gellen. By 13th century the village became one of the most important trade centres of the area, competing with the nearby town of Gdańsk. In the 17th and 18th centuries prolonged warfare and a series of natural disasters severely damaged the town. It was severely depopulated and in 1872 the government of the newly formed German state abolished the city rights granted to Hel six centuries previously. The period of decline was halted in 1893 when a fishing harbour was built in the village and the village was granted the status of a sea-side resort. As a result of World War I and the Treaty of Versailles Poland was re-established as an independent nation, Hel became part of Poland. In addition, the village became one of the two main naval bases of the Polish Navy. The harbour was expanded and in 1936 the president declared the peninsula a "Fortified Area" under jurisdiction of the Polish Army. In 1960 a road linking Hel with Jastarnia on the mainland was built. Three years later city rights were reintroduced. Since then the tourist industry started to recover and several hotels, guest houses and pensions were built. In 1996 the Polish Navy sold all remaining parts of the peninsula to the civilian authorities and only a small naval base is located there today. The harbour now serves primarily as a yacht marina, though there are some fishing boats and ferries to Gdansk, Sopot and Gdynia in the summer.

Hel - ośrodek turystyczny i kąpielisko nadmorskie, ośrodek rybołówstwa, garnizon Marynarki Wojennej z portem wojennym. Port morski Hel ma przystań rybacką, jachtową i żeglugi pasażerskiej, położony na cyplu Mierzei Helskiej. Hel został po raz pierwszy wzmiankowany w 1198 r. jako kaszubska wieś o nazwie Gellen i ośrodek handlu śledzia. W XIII w. Hel stał się jednym z najważniejszych centrów handlowych regionu, rywalizującym z pobliskim Gdańskiem i otrzymał prawa miejskie. W XVII w. i XVIII w. przedłużające się działania wojenne i klęski żywiołowe poważnie zaszkodziły miastu, którego populacja znacząco zmalała i w 1872 r. rząd nowoutworzonego państwa niemieckiego zniósł prawa miejskie, przyznane Helowi sześć wieków wcześniej. Upadek został powstrzymany w 1893 r., kiedy we wsi został zbudowany port rybacki. W 1896 r. wsi przyznano status nadmorskiego uzdrowiska. Po I wojnie światowej przyznano miejscowość odrodzonemu państwu polskiemu. Dzięki strategicznemu położeniu u wejścia do Zatoki Gdańskiej, Hel stał się ważnym punktem na militarnej mapie kraju i w 1931 r. otwarto tu port wojenny. Po 1945 r. Hel dostał status miejsca szczególnie ważnego strategicznie co wiązało się z tym, że na Hel mogli przyjechać tylko obywatele PRL. Wjazd samochodem prywatnym odbywał się tylko za okazaniem przepustki. Obostrzenie w dostępie do Helu zniesiono dopiero ok. 1989 r., a same szlabany zniknęły dopiero w latach 90. XX w. W 1996r. Polska Marynarka Wojenna sprzedała wszystkie pozostałe części półwyspu władzom cywilnym i znajduje się tam dziś tylko niewielka baza morska, zaś port służy głównie jako przystań jachtowa.
