Yemen Hadramaut 1993

This unusual but distinctive landscape is typical of this area of the Hadramaut rocky desert east of Sayun. The peneplaned Tertiary Jeza formation shales sit on almost horizontal massive Umm Er Radhuma Dolomites and both are deeply eroded.

The bottom of the deepest wadis are several hundreds of metres below the crests. Wadi Hadramaut is located off shot to the left. It made it extremely difficult to run seismic lines or access roads cross-country.

This view is looking south-east from the window of a De Havilland Twin Otter flying from the base camp back to Sana'a. Giving the scene some scale, the Mishtah-1 wellsite is located on the jebel in the foreground.
