The Hearst Tower, on57th street and 8th avenue in Manhattan, is a 46-story glass and steel tower designed by Norman Foster, which rests on top of a 6-story tradtional business building commissioned in the 1920s by William Randolph Hearst. Opened for business in 2006, the Hearst Tower is an example of the modern architecture Renaissance happening in New York City over the past decade. What I find most interesting about this building is the startling contrast between the old building that forms the base and the futuristic tower on top. It feels to me almost like alien civilization came and took over and planted their structure on top of the buildings of an existing established old culture. The tower serves as the world headquarters of the Hearst Corporation publication and communication empire.
