The Saint Sofia Russian Orthodox Cathedral in the background betrays Harbin's international origins. Although a small village existed earlier the modern city was founded in 1898 with the coming of the Chinese Eastern Railway, the city first prospered inhabited by an overwhelming majority of the immigrants from the Russian Empire. In 1917 of the 100,000 inhabitants, 40,000 were Russian while only 23,500 were Chinese! After the 1917 Revolution many more White Russians moved to Harbin but following Japanese invasion in 1931, Soviet occupation in 1945 and Chinese Communist takeover in 1946 the Russian population was reduced to only 450 by the early 1960s.
