We were on Brilliance of the Seas, the ship that backed in close to the shoreline. The town has about 250 year-round residents so there's no dock large enough to hold all the cruise ships that call every summer: they anchor in the (very deep glacier-carved) fiord and shuttle their passengers (our ship held 2000) to the town pier on their lifeboats.



This image was taken from an overlook part-way up the mountain behind Geiranger--the viewpoint at the top of the pass was under six feet of snow...
