Pergamon, an ancient healing centre

This is one of the former operating rooms. The ceiling has collapsed with time. The walls were made of marble which was held by metal pieces. The crusaders stripped back the marble to access and melt the metal for weaponry. Walking around here, it was incredible to imagine that more than 2000 years ago, this was the site of many surgeries. The famous physician Galen was a native of Pergamon and taught medicine here. He did an extensive study on botanicals and their anesthetic properties.
