All the smoke in this dawn view is from burning coal in the spoil rather than from steam engines I'm sorry to say, although we are being pulled by a JS 2-8-2.



Sadly by the time we got to Sandaoling the spoil trains were no longer running, all the overburden being removed by truck as seen here. Much of the large pile of spoil on the left has been built up inside the main body of the pit since the railway workings ceased. The "blue loader" can just be made out in the left distance when viewed large. Previously up to 6 steam locos would be plying the various levels in this view - see channel packet's shot below.
