Te Waihou River – Blue Springs

The spring is fed from the Mamaku Plateau where the water takes up to 100 years to filter through, during this long residence in aquifers, particles and light-absorbing matter are effectively removed from the water. The resulting water is so pure and clean that it produces a beautiful blue colour while being virtually clear.

The Waihou River is fed by many springs and from tributary streams in the Mamaku ranges. Water flows from the Blue Spring at a rate of 42 cubic metres per minute (9240 gallons per minute). The water temperature is a constant 11°C throughout the year.

The Blue Spring at Te Waihou Walkway is internationally acclaimed with water so pure it supplies around 70% of New Zealand’s bottled water.
